Science partnering with society

The beliefs and practices of society or a particular culture can conflict with established science. Managing human and animal disease dilemmas may require recognizing these factors. The mixing of live birds from different farms in an open market or keeping animals in backyard flocks close to humans are examples that show conflict between science-based decision-making and citizens’ firm beliefs. Creating social capital and trust and reexamining beliefs and practices are keys to better human and animal health.
